Bed bug steaming uses a heavy-duty dry steamer to reach bugs and eggs in the soft places they like most. The steam comes out far hotter than a home steam mop, with very little water in it, so it kills bugs and eggs on contact without soaking the fabric. Upholstered headboards, pillows, curtains, the edges of carpet along the skirting and fabric ottomans can all be steamed as well. Because the steam is so dry, most items can be used again once they have aired for a short while.
Steaming is a good choice for mattresses, kids' beds and cots, where many households would rather avoid spray. It does only work where the nozzle touches, though, so the crew pairs it with crevice treatment on hard surfaces like the bed frame and skirting. A second round of steaming about two weeks later deals with any young bugs that hatch from eggs tucked deep in the seams. Vacuum along mattress seams before the visit and empty the vacuum outside straight away.
